About Acai
Acai is the deep-purple berry of a South American palm, valued in pet products mainly for its pigment compounds and fiber content.

- Trace purine alkaloids Analytical studies of acai have found only trace, non-significant levels of purine alkaloids such as theobromine and caffeine, well below the levels found in cacao, but owners of dogs sensitive to these compounds may still want to check product labels for added chocolate flavoring or other purine-containing ingredients mixed into acai blends.
- Added sugars and mix-ins Commercial acai products such as smoothie packs and acai bowls are often blended with sweeteners, chocolate, or xylitol-containing toppings, so a food or treat listing acai should be checked for what else was combined with it.
- Seeds and whole fruit The acai berry has a large proportion of seed to pulp, and whole or unprocessed berries can present a choking or gastrointestinal obstruction risk if fed directly rather than as a processed pulp or powder.
