Rutabaga is a root vegetable used in pet foods mainly as a low‑calorie source of digestible carbohydrates, fiber, and micronutrients (notably vitamin C and potassium), serving to add bulk and texture rather than protein. It is generally safe for dogs and occasionally for cats in small cooked, well‑prepared portions, but can cause gas or digestive upset if overfed and—being a brassica containing glucosinolates—should not be fed in large or frequent amounts, especially to pets with thyroid issues (consult your veterinarian if concerned).
