Miscanthus grass is a processed perennial grass used in pet foods primarily as an insoluble dietary fiber and bulking agent to improve stool quality, support intestinal motility, and help reduce caloric density for weight management. It supplies little digestible protein or energy, tends to be more useful for dogs than obligate‑carnivore cats, and should be used in balanced formulations to avoid excessive fiber that could dilute nutrients or affect digestibility; sourcing and contaminant testing are also important considerations.

Pumpkin is used in pet foods primarily as a fiber-rich carbohydrate and moisture source that can help regulate digestion and firm up loose stools or add bulk for softer stools, and it provides beta-carotene (vitamin A precursor) plus small amounts of vitamins and minerals for dogs and cats. It is safe and beneficial when plain cooked or canned (not spiced or sweetened pie filling), should be fed in moderation as a supplement rather than a primary food, and introduced gradually since large amounts can cause gastrointestinal upset or interfere with absorption of some medications.

Tapioca flour is a refined carbohydrate and starch from the cassava root commonly used in pet foods as a binder, thickener and gluten‑free source of digestible calories to help form kibble and stabilize wet food gravies; it supplies readily available energy but very little protein, fat, vitamins or minerals. Generally well tolerated and useful in grain‑free formulas, its high glycemic load and limited nutritional value mean it can contribute to excess calories and is not ideal as a primary ingredient for weight management or diabetic pets, and commercial products should be properly processed to remove naturally occurring cassava compounds.

Chicken protein is a common high-quality animal protein in dog and cat foods, providing essential amino acids that support muscle maintenance, growth and metabolic functions and contributing to dietary taurine for cats when present in sufficient amounts. It is generally highly digestible and palatable, though nutritional value depends on the form (fresh meat, chicken meal, or hydrolyzed protein); pet parents should note potential food allergies or intolerances and consider ingredient sourcing and added fats or sodium, consulting a veterinarian if concerns arise.

Carob powder is used in pet foods and treats mainly as a chocolate substitute and flavoring/colorant that is naturally free of theobromine and caffeine, and it provides soluble fiber along with small amounts of protein, calcium and carbohydrates. While generally safe for dogs (and occasionally used in cat treats, though cats have limited ability to taste sweetness), it is calorie- and sugar-containing so should be used sparingly to avoid weight gain or digestive upset, and owners should ensure products do not contain toxic added sweeteners such as xylitol.
