It may support hydration and gut or joint comfort through gelatinous proteins, but it should not replace a balanced diet and caregivers should choose low‑sodium, additive‑free pet-safe broths and avoid products with seasonings or bone fragments, especially for pets with beef allergies.

Water is an essential nutrient and the primary solvent and moisture component in pet foods, especially wet and canned diets, and is also used in processing and to adjust texture and palatability. It is vital for digestion, nutrient transport, temperature regulation and waste removal in dogs and cats; pets must have constant access to clean water as dehydration can quickly lead to serious health issues and requirements increase with activity, heat, or illness, while moisture in wet food can help meet part of their daily needs.

Beef bone in pet food is typically used as a source of minerals (especially calcium and phosphorus), ash and sometimes marrow-derived fat and flavor, most often included as ground bone or bone meal to help meet mineral requirements and enhance palatability for dogs and cats. While it can contribute useful minerals and texture, excessive bone increases ash and can disrupt mineral balance, and whole or cooked bones risk dental fracture, splintering, choking or gastrointestinal obstruction (raw bones also carry bacterial contamination concerns), so bone-containing ingredients must be carefully formulated and whole bones should only be given under veterinary guidance.

Cooked carrots are more digestible and release more beta‑carotene, but cats cannot efficiently convert beta‑carotene to active vitamin A so carrots are more nutritionally useful for dogs than as a primary vitamin A source for cats; they should be fed in moderation due to natural sugars and should be offered in appropriately sized pieces to avoid choking.

Butternut squash is a cooked vegetable ingredient used in pet foods as a source of soluble and insoluble fiber, complex carbohydrates, and antioxidants (notably beta‑carotene/vitamin A), often included to aid digestion, add moisture, and support healthy weight management. It can benefit dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats by supplying fiber, vitamins A and C, and potassium, but should be cooked and seedless for digestibility, used sparingly in diabetic animals due to carbohydrate content, and treated as a complement to—not a replacement for—animal-based protein.
