Cabbage palm (the edible heart-of-palm from certain palm species) may be used in pet foods as a vegetable ingredient that contributes low-calorie bulk, moisture and dietary fiber along with modest amounts of micronutrients such as potassium and vitamin C. While generally non-toxic when properly processed for food, it is uncommon in commercial pet diets and can cause gastrointestinal upset if fed raw or in large amounts, so formulations should use approved edible palm species and safe processing to avoid contaminants or indigestible plant material.
