About Oat

Oat is a cereal grain milled or rolled into pet food to supply digestible starch, soluble fiber, and plant protein.

Oats are commonly used in pet foods as a digestible carbohydrate and source of soluble fiber (beta‑glucans), plant protein, B vitamins and minerals, which can support healthy digestion and help moderate blood glucose and cholesterol. They are generally well tolerated by dogs and can be included sparingly for cats, but owners should avoid flavored or sweetened preparations (and ingredients like xylitol or raisins), be mindful of possible grain sensitivities or cross‑contamination with gluten, and prefer cooked oats for better digestibility and portion control due to caloric content.

Why it's used

Gluten cross-contact Oats do not naturally contain the gluten proteins found in wheat, but they are frequently grown, transported, or milled alongside gluten grains, so formulas for pets on a strict grain-elimination diet may specify certified gluten-free oats.
Digestibility of fiber Dogs and cats lack the enzymes to break down fiber itself, so the benefit of oat fiber comes from fermentation and bulking effects in the gut rather than from the fiber being digested directly.
Topical use is different from dietary use Colloidal oatmeal is separately used in veterinary dermatology as a topical soak or shampoo ingredient for itchy or irritated skin, a distinct application from oats eaten as a food ingredient.
