They provide readily available calories and some minerals (e.g., potassium) and can serve as a gluten‑free carbohydrate alternative, but are high in starch and glycemic load—which may promote weight gain or affect blood glucose control in diabetic pets—and processing can reduce vitamin content; cats still require primarily animal protein despite tolerating some starch.
