About Paprika

Paprika is a ground spice from dried sweet peppers, added to pet food in small amounts mainly to tint kibble a reddish-orange color.

Paprika is a mild spice used in small amounts in pet foods mainly for color and flavor, and it contains carotenoid pigments that have antioxidant properties and can contribute trace amounts toward vitamin A activity but are not a significant nutritional source for dogs or cats. Generally safe at low levels, paprika can cause gastrointestinal or skin irritation in sensitive animals—especially hot/spicy varieties that contain capsaicin—so it should be avoided in large quantities and in diets for pets with known sensitivities.

Why it's used

Manufacturers use paprika's carotenoid pigments, capsanthin and capsorubin, to give kibble a warmer, more appetizing color without synthetic dyes. The amounts used for coloring are small enough that paprika does not function as a meaningful nutrient source in the finished diet.

Common concerns

  • Capsaicin content varies by type Sweet paprika, the type most often used for color, is bred to be very low in capsaicin, but hot paprika varieties contain more and can cause oral or GI irritation if a pet consumes a notable amount.
  • GI or skin sensitivity Even mild spice ingredients can trigger digestive upset in individual pets, so formulas for pets with known sensitivities may limit or avoid added spices like paprika.

Also relevant

Paprika is not one of the more common ingredients in commercial pet food, appearing less often than more widely used natural colorants.
